Debut LP from this relatively new Bay area group. Mane navigate a sound that falls somewhere within the postpunk/avant garde realm. Alpha Female is quite the disorienting first listen, with the drum-n-bass opener, "New World Order" hardly serving as a template for the rest of the album. This is far too upbeat to be considered goth/darkwave in any manner, though I'm certainly hearing a reverence for a more pop-driven postpunk sound ala Bauhaus. There's a great loose, unconfined feel to these twelve tracks that hints more at the "avant" tag I outlined earlier, perhaps it falls in the clean tone simplicity and twisted, harmonized vocal chants. Whatever it is, Mane almost remind me of 100 Flowers or later Wire with their approach as the record carries on. A very refreshing, unpretentious listen that only improves upon further spins.
